Academy fixture: Dagenham & Redbridge 3 Gillingham 2

Dagenham & Redbridge’s academy returned to winning ways with a 3-2 success over Gillingham.

After losing to MK Dons the previous weekend, a Luke Hirst brace and a goal from Elliot Bonds helped Daggers edge past the Gills.

Despite the final result, the young Daggers fell behind in unfortunate circumstances early on by conceding an own goal.

Hirst, though, soon had Daggers level when scoring his first goal of the match, and of the season.

Midway through the first half, Bonds produced a tidy finish to put the youngsters ahead.

Hirst then netted his second of the match to double the hosts’ lead.

Gillingham set up a tense finale by netting a second goal late on, but Daggers hled on to win.

Academy manager Micah Hyde said: “I’m happy to see all the players doing their jobs across the pitch and they produced what I expected them to produce, which was pleasing to see.”
