Barnet manager John Still admitted it was mixed emotions managing his side against his former and boyhood club Dagenham & Redbridge.

The Bees came from a goal down to seal a 2-1 victory and earn three points at the Hive on Bank Holiday Monday.

“Of course it’s mixed emotions because regardless of what’s happened I spent a large part of my career there and the supporters don’t always understand some things,” the 68-year-old said.

“If they speak to the chief executive they’d understand that if I stay at Dagenham they can’t afford to pay players.”

The former boss revealed he turned down the opportunity to manage in the Football League at the back end of last season to remain at the club until the summer.

“I turned down opportunities to go to a league club after having a consultation with Steve Thompson and Dave Bennett where I said if you want me to go then I’ll go.

“They said we’d sooner you stay until the end of the season and see what we can do so I didn’t go to a league club and I stayed.”

He also admitted he didn’t want to leave the club and believes some of the comments from the Daggers faithful during the match.

“I said at the time I don’t want to go but if you want me to go then I’ll go so when I get some of the comments there it’s not nice as I’ve given a lot of time to that club.

“I’ve given a lot of effort to that club and produced a lot of success for that club and if I’d have just walked out and left them then I could understand it maybe a little bit but I didn’t want to go.

“I didn’t want to go and turned down the opportunity for a league club in the last month or so of the season as the club said we might have a better chance of finding someone to take over the club with me here, so that was no problem.”
