Falcon kickboxiong club claim titles

Romford’s Falcon Kickboxing Club had double reason to celebrate as Liam Wells and Gareth Evans landed British titles on the same night.

The duo were competing on the Kombat Zone promotion at Chatgham’s Lordswood Leisure Centre, with Wells facing Scottish champion Jamie Mclelland in the first defence of his IKF light-welterweight belt.

Known for his kicking technique, Wells had been focusing on his boxing skills and came out throwing a barrage of punches, including a right cross which put Mclelland on the canvas.

The Scot took his time to get up with the count at eight but was hunted into a corner in the second round and dropped again after a series of powerful hooks to the body.

There was no escape this time as Wells retained his crown with a knockout and Colin Payne, head of the IKF UK, said: “Liam is going from strength to strength. Without a doubt the best in his division domestically by far!”

Evans had earned his title shot by remaining undefeated in the super-welterweight division, including a barnstorming draw with English champion Shane Bernhauser for the vacant British title before Christmas.

Their rematch was the last fight of the night and lived up to the hype, with both picking up from where they left off in a hard-hitting first round.

Evans caused damage to Bernhauser’s nose early on, as blood flowed, and the heavy punches and kicks continued to rain down from both sides over the five rounds.

The pair showed plenty of heart throughout to remain on their feet in a real test of endurance, giving everything before the split decision went the way of Evans.
