And that’s just on the pitch.
The field of sports nutrition is growing all the time, but as fast paced as it is, it has yet to reach the tea tables of cricket clubs across the country.
But we are not complaining.
Who needs a chicken and avocado wrap when you have sausage rolls and a slab of Jamaica Cake?
On a weekend many a century or five-wicket haul has been fuelled by no more than a cheese roll and a jam tart.
If Ian Botham was playing over the Recreation Ground we are fairly certain he wouldn’t be tucking in to a pasta and pumpkin seed salad.
Last year the staff of the England cricket team produced a 82-page dossier of dietary requirements for their tour of Australia and look what happened there.
No matter how many “goji berry” breakfast bars you eat Mitchell Johnson is still pretty sharp.
At the other end of the cricket spectrum in local parks the traditional cricket tea is the perfect blend of carbs (sandwiches), protein (chicken drumsticks) and hydration (PG tips) and of course caffeine has been shown to have a positive effect of sports performance – so an extra cup of tea is usually required before re-entering the field of play.
But there are some danger zones. Tuna or egg on a hot day tend to sweat more than a family-sized office worker on a packed tube train.
In fact last year our “Chief Egg Chef” and 4th XI tea maker had half of Gants Hill cordoned off in a nuclear egg based fallout.
Bomb disposal experts were called in to dispose of the offending tray in a safe and timely manner.
Again, not that anyone is complaining.
Tea makers are the most important of all volunteers and what they provide is often the best part of the day - especially if you have been smashed for 50 off 5 overs or out first ball for 0. They are the heroes and heroines of cricket clubs across the land.
So back to the cricket. Pepperoni pizza pockets and pork pies aside the good news is that Ilford Catholic 2nd XI got off to a great start with a win over Hockerill on Saturday with leg spinner Ravi Ramanuja picking up a five-wicket haul.
But he is a clean living vegetarian - so maybe take the above with a pinch of salt.
