Wanstead came out on top in their Essex League Premier Division showdown with top flight new boys Harold Wood at Overton Drive.

The defending champions were put into bat after losing the toss and saw captain Arfan Akram fall without scoring.

Wood’s Shahbaz Khan produced a stunning spell to finish with 5-35, including the scalp of Essex youngster Kishen Velani.

But Joe Ellis-Grewal (27) and Mahesh Velani (26) helped Wanstead reach 134 in 32 overs.

And it proved beyond Wood in a low-scoring contest as Zain Shahzad (2-15) and Kishen Velani (3-19) made early inroads with the ball.

Colin Sher (34) and Hamza Ikram (40) were the only Wood batsmen to make much impact, with Umar Farooq unbeaten on 12 as they were dismissed for 103.

Mo Fayyaz Khan (2-21), Usman Sahar (2-23) and Ellis-Grewal shared the other wickets to fall.

Upminster went down by seven wickets against Brentwood in a higher-scoring encounter.

Alan Ison fell one run short of a century, after hitting five sixes and six fours, in Upminster’s 272-7.

Reece O’Connell (48), Nick O’Dell (27), Arshad Ali (26) and captain Ollie Peck (25 not out) also made starts, but Brentwood chased down their target with seven overs to spare after fine knocks from Aaron West (97 not out) and Tom Oakley (92).

Ilford lost by the same margin against Chingford, after Hendro Puchert (71 not out) carried his way in their modest total of 138.

South Woodford lost by six wickets against Loughton, after Michael Gymer (43) top scored in their 214.

Garry Neicho (3-13) bowled a tight spell in reply, but Loughton got home with two overs to spare.

Wanstead booked a place in the next round of the Essex League Cup with a 69-run win over South Woodford on Sunday.

Dismissed for 132, the visitors saw Usman Sahar (7-19) skittle the home side for just 63 inside 18 overs in reply.

Puchert hit an unbeaten 115 for Ilford, meanwhile, as they piled up 257-4 in their quarter-final tie at Brentwood.

Aron Nijjar (66) gave good support in a 123-run stand and Brentwood came up short in reply on 243, as Adil Ali (3-33) and Puchert (3-54) shared bowling honours for Ilford.
