Barking-born batsman ready to deliver for Eagles against Nottinghamshire and get to another Lord’s final

Varun Chopra is determined to help Essex defeat Nottinghamshire and reach the final of the Royal London One-Day Cup tomorrow.

The former Warwickshire captain returned to Chelmsford permanently during the winter and Eagles are now on the verge of securing a Lord’s final

Chopra has enjoyed a decent one-day campaign so far, scoring a century against Glamorgan last month, but is keen to deliver tomorrow.

“I have been pleased. My one-day form has been okay. You always want to get more, but it was nice to get a score at Cardiff,” said the 29-year-old.

“I got another at Canterbury the other day, but when it gets to the knock-out stage, this is where it counts.

“Hopefully a couple of players from our side can put their hands up tomorrow and take us to Lord’s.”

What has helped Essex win virtually all of their one-day games so far has been vital contributions, but from different people.

Chopra has scored runs, Alastair Cook’s been excellent, while Tom Westley and Ashar Zaidi have delivered.

On top of the aforementioned four, the captain Ryan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara have demonstrated their class regularly.

And with the ball Jamie Porter and Paul Walter have been consistent, while Simon Harmer and Neil Wagner have shone.

Barking-born Chopra said: “We have had quite a few different players get hundreds and all the bowlers in different games have chipped in with vital wickets.

“To win the amount of games we have, there are going to be good individual performances all the way, but we have a method and if we stick to that game plan tomorrow, we will see where we end up.”

If Essex do reach the final, it will be a new experience for many members of their young squad.

Some of the current group represented the club in 2008 when Eagles won the Friends Provident Trophy against Kent.

Cook, Bopara, James Foster and ten Doeschate played in that final, but Chopra also has experience in this department.

He captained Warwickshire to their first domestic T20 success in 2014 and helped them reach the final of the Royal London One-Day Cup in the same year.

Chopra added: “A Lord’s final is one of the great occasions of the season and I have been fortunate to reach a couple.

“We are one game away from a really good day out and everyone knows what is at the end, so hopefully we can turn up tomorrow and put in a good performance.”

It is a big match for Essex, though they are quietly confident of delivering and seeing off Nottinghamshire.

Chris Silverwood’s team know it will not be easy, but they have plenty of belief prior to the 1.30pm start.

“I think it is a good sign for everyone to be chilled and relaxed, and that is how you want to be,” said Chopra.

“The boys have been playing some good cricket to come top of the group and then we have continued that in the County Championship.

“I think as a squad we are pretty confident and training has been done and everyone feels prepared. Now it is time to relax and get mentally right for tomorrow.”
