All-rounders return to boost Peck squad

Upminster begin a new Essex League Premier Division campaign at home against Loughton tomorrow (Saturday).

Ollie Peck has all-rounder Arshad Ali at his service once again, following his spell at Shenfield, and Alan Ison back from spinal surgery in an otherwise largely unchanged squad.

Upminster flirted with relegation last summer, before ensuring their survival on the penultimate weekend of the season, and will be looking to feature in the top half of the table in 2014.

They slipped to a slender friendly defeat against South Woodford last weekend, having let their Premier Division rivals off the hook.

Harry Shirt’s century rescued South Woodford from 98-6 to 201-9 and Upminster came up 17 runs short of victory after Matt Tigg (68) led their reply.

Upminster welcome local rivals Brentwood in a National Cup tie on Sunday and the club has also been boosted by news that they have been granted another benefit match against an Essex XI for England captain Alastair Cook.

The match is set to take place on Sunday September 7, with full details on sponsorship opportunities to be released in the coming weeks.

A club spokesman said: “Everyone at the club is honoured that we will be able to hold an event for the current England captain and would like to thank Alastair and his benefit team for agreeing to visit Upminster Park as part of his year.

“Alastair played in the 2005 benefit match in aid of current Essex coach Paul Grayson and also visited the club in April 2006 as part of the Natwest CricketForce.”
