This Sunday we welcome Ravi Bopara and the Essex team to Upminster Park for Ravi’s benefit match.

It has been a regular event for us to hold and it’s always an honour for the club to host it. If you have never come down, it is always a really good day.

We always have a good turn out from the Upminster public and they seem to enjoy the Beer Tent and BBQ. The poor bar staff are completely toasted by the end.

The Beer Tent will be open from 12 noon on Sunday, so why not come and enjoy a nice beer in the sun while watching the Essex batsman smash the bowling into Iceland.

Sunday’s raffle sees some excellent prizes on offer too: tickets for the Royal London Cup final, signed cricket memorabilia, an Indian Meal for two and much, much more.

There will also be a silent auction for some special prizes and more details of this will follow between now and Sunday.

Every year we reward a colt for their performances over the years and in the Matchplay, plus some club men with a spot in the benefit team.

George Sadek is the chosen young gun this year after his efforts in the colts and adult sides over the past few years.

The club has very kindly included myself and Adam Quested in the team also.

The prospect of bowling my non-turning dross to Ryan ten Doeschate over at tiny Upminster Park may get the residents of Stewart Avenue worried.

In honour of Australian hero Glenn McGrath I am going to call out an Essex batsman that I will clean up.

Nick Browne – you’ve had a cracking year, but I am coming for your off stump!

Last year Mark D’Cruz was the chosen clubman and a few weeks before the benefit he made some remarks about Mark Pettini on social media.

Luckily for the crowd we were treated to the sight of him running in and destroying Pettini’s middle pole which now will always be my favourite benefit match moment.

Play starts at 1.30pm, but if you can’t make it along in person, then follow @uccbenefit on Twitter for all the day’s happenings.
