Stand-in skipper James Coote was pleased to play a leading role for Hornchurch Athletic as they kept their Mid-Essex League Division Two promotion hopes alive with a 79-run win over Havering.

Athletic, minus an ill Sam Samarasekera, found themselves 83-6 before Coote arrived at the crease.

And his timely knock of 73, alongside contributions of 20 from tailenders Paul Crane and Neil Hutchison, saw them reach 200.

Jackson and Roe were the chief wicket takers for Havering with figures of 4-43 and 3-35 respectively.

Despite that still being below-par in Coote’s eyes, he was more than happy to skittle Havering out for 121, thanks to 4-11 from Hutchison and two wickets apiece for Paul Humphries and Crane.

Lazenby and Hurley both hit 26 as the leading contributions for Havering, and victory left Coote purring at his side’s display in the field, after Athletic’s tail wagged considerably.

“I don’t like to blow my own trumpet, but we were in a difficult situation,” said Coote.

“I got 30 off one over which was a massive boost as well to get us up to 200.

“The four of us down the order picked up 120-130 runs and that was vital, but 200 was still below par.

“We didn’t have much luck with the bat early on, it was a mixture of poor shots and good bowling from Havering.

“But we then all bowled well, Neil in particular to pick up four wickets. I was really happy with the bowling.”

Athletic face Writtle tomorrow (Saturday), before what will be a promotion decider against Brookweald on the final day of the season.

“Hopefully we can go into the Brookweald game on the back of a good showing against Writtle,” added Coote.

“We didn’t play well against Brookweald in the game earlier in the season so we will all be keen to put that right.”
