Essex bowler Jamie Porter believes the defending champions are well placed heading into day two of their County Championship Division One contest against Nottinghamshire.
Porter took 4-50 as the hosts were dismissed for 177 at Trent Bridge on Monday, with Matt Quinn (3-37) and Matt Coles (3-62) sharing the other wickets.
Debutant Murali Vijay hit nine fours in his 56 in reply, but Essex slipped from 93-1 to 133-5 at the close, with nightwatchman Porter unbeaten alongside captain Ryan ten Doeschate.
He said: “We are in a good position in the game. To bowl them out for just under 200 is slightly frustrating because we thought we could bowl them out for 130 or 140 but it wasn’t the case.
“They are allowed partnerships and that’s the way it goes. It isn’t all in favour of the bowlers – there will be opportunities for the batters to score runs as well but overall we are happy at the position we are in.”
