Gidea Park & Romford moved within 28 points of second-placed Orsett in the Essex League Second Division last weekend, but captain Chris Collier isn’t thinking about promotion just yet.
Gidea Park secured a second consecutive win last Saturday as they comfortably beat Westcliff-on-Sea by eight wickets after bowling them out for 87 with Nigel Fretwell (4-29) and Rudi Filmalter (3-36) doing most of the damage.
They then knocked off the required runs for the loss of just two wickets as Jamal Francis made 31 and Josh Turner 20 not out.
Collier, however, is still taking it one game at a time ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) away clash against Fives & Heronians.
“Promotion is not really something we have given much thought,” said Collier.
“We are taking it one game at a time and just hope we can build some momentum in these final weeks of the season.
“We got a really good win against Orsett recently, but we have lost some poor matches. We should have chased down the (105 run) target against Billericay and we lost to West Essex so if we had those we might be looking.”
Gidea Park won the previous meeting between the two teams by five wickets, but only in the last over and Collier admits it could be another close match this weekend.
He revealed it is hard to judge how strong teams are though and will firstly ask his team to turn up and give it their all.
Collier added: “It is an important game this weekend. It was very tight last time, it went down to the last over, but fortunately we came out on top.
“I think we bowled and fielded very well last time and batted really well to chase down 205.
“You only see these teams when you play them so it is hard to judge how close they really are because they could have a really off day when you see them, but you just have to turn up on the day, try your hardest and hope it is enough.”
