Harold Wood and Wanstead had most to cheer in the latest round of Essex League Premier Division action as both recorded their third wins of the fledgling season.

Top-flight new boys Wood dismissed hosts Loughton – promoted above them last summer as Division One champions – for just 111 thanks to excellent spells from Shahbaz Khan (5-13) and Umar Farooq (4-17).

But Tom Clarke’s men also struggled with the bat, with only Colin Sher (27) passing 20 as they battled to a two-wicket triumph.

Defending champions Wanstead reached 258 at Shenfield, following half centuries from Essex youngster Kishen Velani (69) and captain Arfan Akram (61).

Slow left-armer Joe Ellis-Grewal (6-39) then shone with the ball to bowl Wanstead to a 57-run success.

John Curtis (3-54) was the pick of the Upminster bowling as Chingford made 239-8, but the top three fell cheaply in reply and Nick O’Dell’s 57 proved in vain in a 54-run loss.

South Woodford claimed the derby spoils against Ilford, after Michael Gymer and Kevin Sargent both made 48 in their total of 201.

Irfan Sahar (5-33) impressed with the ball for Ilford and top scored with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 33 at number nine as the visitors collapsed to 112 all out.

Captain Gurdeep Kandola (24) was the only other Ilford batsman to pass 20, as James Malin (4-19), Harry Shirt (2-15), Nick Browne (2-45) and Garry Neicho shared the wickets.

Woodford Wells skittled Ardleigh Green for just 83 in Division One, with Rory Ellison (5-21) the chief destroyer.

Alex Cason (36) top scored for Green, before Wells eased to a seven-wicket victory.

Hainault fell to a nine-wicket loss against Hutton, after being dismissed for a modest 139.

Put into bat, they slipped to 29-4 before Etinder Boparaa and John French both scored 34.

Steve Hammond (4-28) and Hanuman Vihari Gade (4-56) did most of the damage with the ball, before Gade smashed three sixes and 13 fours on his way to an unbeaten 83, from just 48 balls, to steer Hutton home.

Hornchurch recorded their third win in Division Two, thanks to an unbeaten century from Ronnie Saunders against Billericay.

Spinners Marc Whitlock (4-59), Chamikara Mudalige (3-57) and Taqi Abbas (2-43) combined to dismiss the visitors for 177, before Saunders (102 not out) and Paul Murray (54) took Hornchurch to the brink of an eight-wicket triumph.

Gidea Park & Romford broke their duck with a four-wicket win at basement boys Westcliff, after a superb haul from Sarvesh Damle (6-31) saw the hosts dismissed for 148.

Nigel Fretwell (3-33) also impressed, before Alan Croft (35) top scored in Park’s run chase.

Milan Desai (26 not out) and Chris McKie (24 not out) steered the visitors home after a middle-order wobble.

Greg Summers (5-53) took the bowling plaudits as Fives & Heronians held Belhus to 189-9, but a woeful batting display saw them slump to 64 all out in reply.

Rizwan Akram, Bradley Knapman and Ben Britton were the only Fives batsmen to reach double figures as Danny Norris (5-15) and Connor Day (4-41) combined to devastating effect.

Meanwhile, Oakfield Parkonians were dismissed for just 131 by Division Three rivals Stanford on their way to a five-wicket defeat.
