Hornchurch Athletic

Hornchurch Athletic's home ground

Hornchurch Athletic’s Nathaniel Bastin is writing a regular blog during the 2015 season

All games washed out this weekend, unfortunate. Pleasingly, Saturday was not an entire waste as sodden members gathered to watch the final ODI between England and New Zealand.

Adverse weather often provides an opportunity for players to share cricketing stories from down the years and so, in the absence of any match highlights, I would like to describe just a couple of scenarios I have found amusing in my time at HACC.

Roll with the Macadelic – Stuart Whitaker attempted to intercept a cut shot in 2014 and had his path blocked by a growth of overhanging willow branches as he ran around the boundary.

Head down, he scythed his way through almost in slow motion before putting in an hilariously cumbersome dive, attempting to grasp the ball which was now lying motionless a foot inside the rope.

As he rolled, he succeeded only in flinging the stationary ball over his shoulder for four, gifting the batsman two additional runs. Adam Davis, the bowler, had some quite unsavoury things to say about it.

Clements’s catch – An oppressively hot day at Gorsebrook, the opposition were within touching distance of reaching 350 having earlier been reduced to 30-odd for four.

Sixes raining down, the runs just kept coming. In truth, every Athletic player was praying the ball didn’t get drilled their way.

I cannot begin to describe just how flat and hard this one particular shot was hit at Danny Clements, who hadn’t the will to catch it but realised despairingly that it was heading straight at him.

Raising only his right arm (presumably to palm the ball to the ground) he clutched hold of the missile without his hand even recoiling an inch. The team’s stunned silence was shortly followed by hysterical laughter!

More to follow if the drizzle persists.
