Smith sets next target for champions

Hornchurch captain Roy Smith insists standards will not slip after clinching the Essex League Division Two title.

Smith was a satisfied man after seeing his side crowned champions following a six-wicket win at Horndon.

And he wants them to maintain their form against Orsett at Harrow Lodge Park tomorrow (Saturday), having set another target.

He said: “Hopefully we can win our last two and get over the 300 points mark.

“We can’t take our foot off the pedal, that wouldn’t be fair on the other sides because Billericay are still going for promotion as are Belhus and Leigh.

“People want to get milestones as well and they will want to keep performing to keep their place for next year because we’ll strengthen again.”

Sri Lankan spinner Chamikara Mudalige took five wickets to help bowl Horndon out for 194 last weekend, before opener Paul Murray smashed 102.

And then it was down to Smith and Chris Sains to see Hornchurch over the finish line and ensure they would be a Division One team next season, with the latter hitting the winning runs.

A delighted Smith added: “It is very satisfying to win the league, especially with two games to go.

“It is Division Two, but pressure is still there. The wickets aren’t as good as they are in Division One or the Premier League so that is a leveller.

“It is superb to win it. We had a lot of time left to get the runs as well, nine or ten overs remaining, so we cruised to victory with Chris Sains coming in and hitting the winning runs.

“It was a good performance and then we found out after the game that Orsett had drawn so we had a few drinks at Horndon and celebrated the win there.”
