Smith reflects on Leigh reverse

Hornchurch captain Roy Smith was disappointed to see his side lose just their second match of the Essex League Division Two season against Leigh on Saturday.

Chasing 195 to win, no Hornchurch batsman passed 25 runs and although nine made it into double figures, the leaders were bowled out for 184.

Smith was philosophical in defeat, though, and admitted the absence of three key players played a part, saying: “I am disappointed, but you won’t go all season winning every week.

“We have already lost one game and it does happen. It was unfortunate, we had three players missing and that changed the way we played.

“We were without Chamikara Mudalige, the leading wicket-taker in the league; Paul Murray, the best wicket-keeper batsman in the league, and Jamie Sorrell, our other opening batsman.

“It does make a difference being without them three. The ones that came in did well, but it changes the game plan and how you are going to play.”

Although Hornchurch restricted Leigh to 194-9 from their 50 overs, with Marc Whitlock (3-30) and Myles Wells (2-25) impressing, Smith felt the opposition got far too many runs.

He revealed they had reduced the hosts to 86-6 and 107-7, but Leigh wicketkeeper and number nine Billy King hit a valuable 48 not out and Smith praised his innings.

“To be honest we let them get too many runs,” he added.

“Leigh’s number nine hit 48 and played really well and we were lacking a fifth bowler.

“You see it so many times in cricket and you have to sometimes just say credit where credit is due. They dug in and got some extra runs for there team.

“The number nine could have got out swinging, but he dug in, got his team up to a decent score and he won man of the match.”

Smith was confident his team could chase down the target set, but admitted the pitch kept catching them out, adding: “Everyone got in, but nobody could go on.

“There were no real problems, everyone was calm and everybody got in, but there was a bit in the pitch and it seemed to just catch us out every now and then.

“Without doubt we were confident of chasing it, we knew they got too many runs, but sometimes you just hold your hands up and give the opposition credit.”
