Belhus beaten in opening group fixture

Hornchurch made a winning start to their Dukes Essex T20 campaign at Harrow Lodge Park last night.

Captain Roy Smith won the toss and chose to bat against Belhus, with in-form Paul Murray (68) and Ronnie Saunders (30) providing a good platform.

Smith weighed in with an unbeaten 45 himself as the home side – riding high in Essex League Division Two so far this season – closed on a challenging 177-2.

And Belhus were restricted to 115-9 in their reply, as Taqi Abbas picked up four wickets and Chamikara Mudalige weighed in with a brace.

Smith said: “The boys are flying at the moment and want to do well this year.

“They’re upping their game and looking unstoppable at the top of the order. We’ve got others, like Chris Sains who is a 600 runs a season man, not even getting to the crease.”

Hornchurch visit Ilford next on Thursday June 12 and must also travel to Wanstead in their group, with the top two earning places in the last 16.

Smith added: “They’re going to be two hard games but you never know your luck.

“If we can get a full side out, we fancy our chances.”

Hornchurch are due to visit Leigh in their next league fixture tomorrow (Saturday).
