Latest news from the Essex League

It proved a good day for the high-flying teams in the Essex League at the weekend.

Defending Premier Division champions notched up their fifth win in six matches this summer with a convincing success at Loughton.

John Chambers and captain Arfan Akram (107) put on a 198-run opening stand, with Chambers finishing unbeaten on 135 as the visitors closed on 338-3.

Usman Sahar made the breakthrough with the ball in Loughton’s reply, with the score on 51, before slow left-armers Mohammed Fayyaz Khan (4-30) and Joe Ellis-Grewal (5-40) worked their way through the rest of the order to clinch a 145-run victory.

Top flight new boys Harold Wood maintained their fine form with victory at Chelmsford.

Bowling honours went to Shahbaz Khan (4-55), Sarfaraz Ahmed (3-43) and Umar Farooq (2-34) as the hosts were dismissed for 195.

Colin Sher (44) and Richard Brabner (23) made starts but Wood looked second favourites at 114-7.

Hamza Ikram (23) and Farooq (46 not out) came to the rescue with a 58-run stand, before Ahmed (22 not out) help seal a two-wicket win.

Ilford got the better of Upminster, after making 210-9 from 64 overs.

Aron Nijjar fell three runs short of a half-century, after Billy Gordon (4-40) shone with the new ball in a 21-over spell for the hosts.

Nigel Jacobs (36) and Haaris Ayub (34) also contributed with the bat for the visitors, before Hendro Puchert removed both Upminster openers in reply.

Elliott Timoti (26) and Shahbaz Butt (50) were the only other home batsmen in double figures as Puchert (5-52) and Shahzad Hafeez (3-10) bowled Ilford to a 65-run victory.

South Woodford skittled Chingford for just 93, with Garry Neicho (6-41) and Matthew Lancaster (2-21) their star performers with the ball.

And the duo held their nerve as South Woodford’s last-wicket pair to clinch victory after Shaun Eaton (4-21) and Jamie Porter (4-29) had left the hosts nine down.

Probably the biggest talking point of the day was Joe Buttleman’s 10-wicket haul for Brentwood.

Buttleman (10-45) dismissed rivals Shenfield for 147 and, after Tom Oakley (40) made early runs in reply, added an unbeaten 42 at number six to seal a six-wicket win.
