Captain Clarke pushing for promotion
Harold Wood stand on the brink of an historic promotion to the Essex League Premier Division, but captain Tom Clarke is trying not to think about it.
Wood moved up to second place in Division One with an exciting win over lowly Fives, thanks to a superb unbeaten century from Craig Sampson.
And they visit Wickford tomorrow (Saturday) knowing another win will secure a second successive promotion and send them into the top flight for the first time.
Clarke said: “We’ve been on a great run, we’ve got one game to go and we’re hoping the rain stays away.
“It will be amazing but I’m still trying not to think about it.
“I’m trying to keep everyone’s feet on the ground. A few were thinking about it already last weekend, but we got lucky with Craig playing so well.”
Umar Farooq (4-45) was the pick of the bowling as Wood dismissed Fives for 218, but they looked to be heading for defeat at 165-8 in reply.
Clarke added: “We bowled well at the start, but their skipper smashed a fifty after we dropped him three times.
“We thought we’d be chasing 170 but they got 218 and we didn’t start brilliantly with the bat and were staring down the barrel at 165-8.
“Craig was due some runs and everything came off for him. He was dropped twice, which is always helpful, and Luke Hammett gave him great support in his first bat for the first team.”
Wood were left needing seven runs off eight balls and Hammett hit a six to level the scores, before Sampson sealed a two-wicket win to finish on 131.
Clarke added: “It’s been a bit crazy, but it will be different class if we can get promoted.”
