Ilford captain hails predecessor

Ilford captain Shaz Hafeez had nothing but praise for predecessor Gurdeep Kandola, after his century helped set up victory at Shenfield.

Shenfield won the toss, electing to bowl first and Suhaib Sarwar and Tom Austin caused Ilford problems with the new ball.

Hendro Puchert (34) was first to fall, shortly followed by Humza Mian (27).

But Kandola stepped up and proved the deciding factor between the two sides with an impressive unbeaten 104 in a total of 280.

Hafeez said: “He was excellent with his batting during the game, following up on 91 not out in the previous game with 104.

“We felt really confident and it all started with the win against Brentwood in the cup.”

Shenfield have struggled so far this season and find themselves at the bottom of the table, but Hafeez admits their position does not reflect their quality.

“Going into the game we thought their results didn’t reflect how they were as a team and how good they were,” he added.

“When we went in for lunch I just said to the team ‘keep focused and keep working hard after the break’ which is what we did.”

Shenfield showed the threat they posses when they stepped up to bat.

Keen’s innings of 109 was ended thanks to a crucial catch by Tony Small who also caught out Tom Phillippe for 64.

Ilford’s bowlers started to apply pressure and Shenfield’s batsmen began to fall, coming up six runs short of their target in a tense finish.

The win cements Ilford’s mid-table position going into their next match ith third-placed Brentwood and Hafeez believes the win at Shenfield could provide a platform to push up the table.

“Looking at where we are at this point in the season it’s about chipping away and hopefully challenging for the title,” he said.
