Gidea Park & Romford claimed an exciting 10-run win over high-flying Colchester in their Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One meeting at Gallows Corner.

Put into bat, they slumped to 67-5 as only captain Jamal Francis (25) made much impact in the face of an inspired spell from Taurai Muzarabani (5-24).

But Sam Hewitt (68) and Harry Phillips (56) showed maturity as they shared 100 for the sixth wicket, with James Pegram adding late runs at the bottom of the order to lift the total to 209.

Colchester’s reply followed a similar trajectory, as they found themselves in trouble at 70-5 before a 105-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Sam O’Sullivan and Sam Hewitt (2-21) claimed two early wickets apiece to give Park hope, before Muzarabani (42) joined opener Joe MacGregor and rebuilt Colchester’s innings.

Francis made the breakthrough for Park, with James Pegram dismissing MacGregor two runs short of a century and Andrew Kennedy for a duck to make it 184-8.

O’Sullivan (3-32) returned to the attack to claim the ninth wicket, before Pegram (3-27) wrapped up victory in the penultimate over.
