Latest news from our Hornchurch Athletic blogger
The first week of the league season is full of little challenges.
The overlap with the football and rugby seasons rob you of half the players and the West Ham v Spurs game claims the other half.
Even the mysterious disappearance of a loanee reserve Charlton keeper works against you (good luck tomorrow Dillon).
But after all this, it will be a proud moment and one that shows Athletic are still on the up when four league teams walk out today.
Slightly weakened, but still confident, we will see many of last year’s Havering League winning under-13s get a game this Saturday, a good warm-up for their Peter Coe Cup game away to Loughton on Monday.
The 1st XI have welcomed former Harold Wood cricketer Sam Klein to the top of the order, having turned out for our Matchplay team a few years back.
Sam enjoyed his previous spell with Athletic and in my best ‘Arry Redknapp voice “He’s a terrific lad and a real quality player.”
However, Michael Gooch has had a tough pre-season.
Last week’s first-baller and an unhealthy obsession with keeping me updated with pictures of the rankest ingrowing toe nail you have ever seen has upset the balance in the changing room.
No one wants to get changed next to him in fear of it being contagious!
