Essex County Cricket Club continued training for the upcoming season with a high-energy session at University of East London’s (UEL) world class SportsDock facility.

It was their second visit to the facility, where they were put through their paces by club trainer Connor Browne, who described SportsDock as “vibrant and busy with good facilities”.

Arfan Akram, UEL’s Sports Development Officer, International and East London Cricket Co-ordinator, said: “It really was great having the Essex County Cricket Club team train with us again, at the SportsDock and Aqua East Gym.

“UEL’s gyms have welcomed many professional athletes to train in our world-class facilities, including members of the Team GB Basketball Team.

“The link between Essex County Cricket Club and UEL is important to us both. This is because cricketers like captain James Foster and Kishen Velani have both grown up in East London, while our former UEL student Tymal Mills is overseas with the England Lions.

“We always look forward to working with professional sportspeople as it inspires our students and shows just how important training is.”

Former England cricketer Sajid Mahmood, 32, who joined the county last season, feels with the squad Essex have at their disposal should be targeting trophies.

“I feel we are strong enough now to compete for major honours,” said Mahmood.

“The aim has got to be to win trophies. If you aren’t desperate to do that, then you probably shouldn’t be in this profession.”
