Left-arm seamer will play for county in Royal London One Day Cup and County Championship

Essex have boosted their squad ahead of the 2017 campaign with the addition of New Zealand international bowler Neil Wagner.

The 30-year-old will play for the Chelmsford-based club in the Royal London One-Day Cup and the County Championship after agreeing a contract until the end of June.

The left-arm seamer has represented the Black Caps in 27 Tests, taking 108 wickets with best figures of 6-41.

Wagner also has experience of the County Championship, having turned out for Lancashire in Division One last season.

And the South African-born paceman is looking forward to returning to the competition this year with Essex after they won promotion from Division Two.

“I really enjoyed my time in England with Lancashire last season, but I am excited about linking up with Essex and building on the team’s success in 2016,” said Wagner.

“I want to bring my experience to the team and help us win games. I hope to help the squad get off to a good start in both competitions.”

Essex coach Chris Silverwood, meanwhile, was pleased to add valuable experience to his youthful squad, commenting: “Neil will bring vast experience at the highest level to the Club, as well as a skill set that will be valuable in the opening months of the season.

“He performed excellently for Lancashire last year and is also useful with the bat lower down the order. Hopefully he can help us hit the ground running in 2017.”
