Billericay claimed a five-wicket win over Ilford in their Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division contest at Valentines Park, despite a stunning century from Ashar Zaidi.

Essex staffer Zaidi celebrated his 37th birthday by hitting 128 off just 114 balls, including four sixes and 16 fours.

But Harsh Kumar was the only other home batsman in double figures as Ilford were dismissed for 196 in the 41st over.

The hosts chose to bat first after winning the toss, but Andy Smith (3-44) made early inroads with the new ball to reduce them to 26-3.

Kumar followed, stumped by Rob Lee off Robert Rayner, with the score on 58, with Zaidi then losing a string of other partners as he held firm at one end.

Rayner (33) proved the pick of Billericay’s bowling, as Darren Ironside (2-18) and Ross Poulton (2-57) nabbed braces and visiting captain Lee Knight held on to three catches.

Saurav Prabahar (26) and Aaron Curtis put on 79 for the first Billericay wicket in reply, with the latter hitting eight fours in his 51 off 61 balls.

Both fell to Haaris Ayub (2-25) in quick succession to give Ilford some encouragement in the field, but Ironside and Knight then put on 67 for the third wicket.

Ironside fell to Zaidi four runs short of a half-century and there were wickets for captain Theeban Tavarasa and Arshad Haroon as Billericay closed in on their target.

And Knight finished unbeaten on 42, from 67 deliveries, as the visitors clinched victory with 10 balls to spare.
