Ardleigh Green captain reflects on first win
Ardleigh Green skipper Chris Cook was relieved to see his side celebrate their first win of the Essex League Division One season at the weekend as they edged out Hainault & Clayhall by 12 runs.
Green reached 189 from their 46 overs thanks to solid knocks from Luke Edwards (57) and Cook (36) before Jamal Chaudhry helped bowl Hainault out for 177 with figures of 3-31 from eight overs.
Cook chose to praise the team performance though rather than focus purely on individuals, saying: “It has been a little while coming and it has been one of those seasons so far, so it was good to get that first win.
“There was a bit of relief when we got that final wicket, but it was a good team performance, everyone contributed which was nice.
“It was one of those days where everything clicked and everyone seemed to perform well.”
Cook and Edwards enjoyed a good partnership in the middle which ensured Green got up to a competitive score on a wicket that had been affected by the poor weather.
And Cook was pleased to spend some time at the crease, adding: “Luke scored a nice fifty and we managed to get a bit of a partnership going.
“I needed to spend some time in the middle and so did he, so it was nice.
“It was a little bit of a funny day in terms of the weather so we were pretty confident with our total and had we faced the full quota I am sure we would have got up to 200.”
Cook admitted to some nerves when Hainault’s former Essex wicketkeeper Robert Rollins was batting, but once he was out he was always sure his side would get the win and he lauded Chaudhry’s control with the ball.
He added: “The Hainault opener (Zoheb Sharif) got off to a good start, but once we got him we were always in the game and we kept getting wickets.
“To be honest when Robert Rollins went I was confident because we were into the tail then, but with him there I was a little nervous.
“Jamal bowled really well and was the standout bowler I would say, he controlled it really well.”
