A decent effort at Brentwood claims skipper

Harold Wood captain Tom Clarke remained phlosophical after his side’s 122-run defeat at Brentwood on Saturday.

The home side made 242 on the back of a century from skipper Aaron West, as Richard Brabner (3-47) and Umar Farooq (2-41) had most success with the ball.

Wood were dismissed for just 120, though, as Colin Sher (28) top scored and Charlie Griffiths took 5-34 for Brentwood.

“To be fair, I thought it was a decent effort on a good pitch,” said Clarke.

“They won the toss and elected to bat, but really, I thought our guys did well with the ball.

“A crucial point of the game came with West at the crease. We dropped him when he was on 20, and he went on to punish us by amassing 107 runs, before we finally had him caught.

“At one stage I thought they would go on to post an even bigger total, but we stuck at it and I thought we did well in the end.”

Clarke once again spoke of his delight at leading his team out at grounds such as the Old County Ground but added: “To be honest, they outclassed us at times and we were always behind the eight-ball as we chased down their total.

“There are a few lessons to be learned as we face the remainder of the season.”
