Centurion raises T20 hopes

Shahbaz Butt smashed a superb unbeaten century to help Upminster to a second successive win in the Dukes Essex T20 competition last night.

Having beaten Basildon by eight wickets in their first group fixture last Friday, Ollie Peck’s men welcomed Southend to Upminster Park.

But after winning the toss and choosing to bat they saw openers Farid Butt (one) and Arshad Ali (four) fall cheaply, before Billy Gordon departed without scoring to leave them 18-3.

Number three Butt was joined by Alan Ison, though, and the pair put on an unbroken 178 for the fourth wicket.

Butt hit four sixes and 18 fours to finish 131 not out, from just 64 balls, while Ison cleared the rope once and added four more boundaries to finish unbeaten on 48, from 42 deliveries, as the hosts closed on 196-3.

Southend’s openers put on 86 in reply, before Peck made the breakthrough.

Gordon struck at the other end and Peck (2-23) added another scalp as the visitors came up short on 158-3.

Upminster are due to host Hadleigh in their final match next Thursday (June 12), looking to clinch a place in the last 16.

Neighbours Hornchurch are set to welcome Belhus to Harrow Lodge Park tomorrow (Thursday, 5.45pm).
