Essex batsman Ravi Bopara looked for the positives after their Royal London One-Day Cup defeat to Surrey on Sunday.

Bopara (74) top scored as the hosts made 294-9 at Chelmsford, with Varun Chopra (61) and Tom Westley (54) also hitting half centuries.

But it was not enough as Jason Roy (86), Dean Elgar (87) and former Essex player Ben Foakes (84 not out) saw the visitors to a six-wicket win with five overs to spare.

Bopara said: “I feel in good form. I’d like to free up a little bit. If I go in a bit later and someone’s already got 80 or 90 then I can play a bit more freely. Or if I go in really early then towards the end I can play a bit more freely. Either way that is what that number five role is.

“We lost Tom and Chopra in two balls, and Dan [Lawrence] hadn’t faced a ball when I walked in. So we were both new at the crease. But we scored quite nicely, I think 50 off the next seven overs or so, which is quite good going when you’ve lost two quick wickets.

“But we both needed to stay there, I needed him to stay there and up the rate together for another five, six, seven-over period. Then we could blast at the end. But we were never able to do that.”

Surrey’s Elgar took his total to 229 in four Royal London Cup innings this season, with their two wins to date coming when batting second.

He added: “I don’t want to put the mockers on it, but we seem to be able to chase relatively big totals nicely. That is when the batters put up their hands a little bit more and they really accept the challenge.

“Jason [Roy] is so devastating as a batter and for him to come off was awesome for us. It was important for us to capitalise in the middle period. We accelerated at the right moment and our scoring rate was really good.”

Essex are back in action on Wednesday (11am) when they welcome Glamorgan to the Cloudfm County Ground.
