Essex’s Alastair Cook and Dawid Malan, of Middlesex, have been named in England’s squad for the winter Ashes tour.

But injured Middlesex bowler Toby Roland-Jones misses out and Essex batsman Tom Westley has been overlooked.

Three uncapped players are included in the 16-man squad, including Surrey’s former Essex wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes, Somerset’s Craig Overton and Hampshire’s Mason Crane.

James Vince (Hampshire) and Gary Ballance (Yorkshire) earn recalls to the middle order at the expense of Westley, who scored 59 against South Africa at The Oval, but went on to average only 24.12 in five Tests this summer.

Malan scored 65 and 61 against the West Indies, averaging 23.62 in his five Test outings.

England: Root, Ali, Anderson, Bairstow, Ball, Ballance, Broad, Cook, Crane, Foakes, Malan, Overton, Stokes, Stoneman, Vince, Woakes.
