Lakeside Hammers host Birmingham Brummies tonight at the Arena Essex Raceway, and co-promoter Jon Cook admits his side need to sharpen up at home – despite two wins.

The Purfleet side won 47-44 against Swindon Robins in their season opener, and added to that with a 52-42 victory last Friday over Leicester Lions.

But on both occasions they have stuttered over the finishing line and Cook hopes his side can start finishing the job earlier.

“It’s two wins at home so far which is good, but we’ve not finished them off as we’d have liked,” said Cook.

“We have got on top and then let both teams back into it, and that needs to change.”

The Hammers inflicted a heavy home defeat on the Brummies just last Wednesday, but the Midlands side have since bounced back with a 46-44 win over Coventry Bees on Wednesday.

And though on paper it may look like a guaranteed home win, Cook knows Birmingham can be very capable around the Raceway with the likes of Adam Skornicki and Edward Kennett amongst their ranks.

“We got a great result up there, but the league is wide open and they’ve bounced back with a good win against Coventry,” he added.

“That’s what makes this league such an exciting one this season, but hopefully we can continue to build that confidence up at home.”

The Hammers are then on the road at Leicester tomorrow, a side new to the Elite League.

For most of the Lakeside team it’ll be their first experience of the track, but Cook feels at this stage of the season there is very little home advantage for the Lions.

“It will be a new experience going there”, said Cook. “They may have done a few practice sessions out there and a couple of meetings, but that’s not much of a home advantage compared to most.”
