England’s women booked their place in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games hockey tournament with victory over Malaysia on Monday.

Beaten 2-1 by India on Sunday, after wins against South Africa and Wales, England saw a first-minute corner from Giselle Ansley just evade Susannah Townsend’s stick at the post.

Hannah Martin’s reverse stick shot was kicked away by the keeper and Townsend saw a backhand effort from a tight angle palmed away.

But England opened the scoring with a brilliant finish from Ellie Watton and went close to a second when Anna Toman’s pass was volleyed wide by Townsend.

Ansley sent a penalty stroke wide early in the second quarter, before Townsend fired past the post after a great run into the D.

Watton’s deflected effort crept just wide on 24 minutes, before England were awarded a second penalty stroke, but Grace Balsdon’s effort was superbly saved by Farah Yahya.

Malaysia were unable to convert successive corners late in the first half and England doubled their lead after the restart as Martin swept home Ellie Rayer’s cross from the baseline.

Balsdon’s short corner strike was saved by Yahya, but England got their third goal in the early stages of the final quarter as Bray pounced from close range.
