Youngsters to compete in boxing tournament
Three young boxers from Romford will be fighting at a big Danish-English tournament in Copenhagen this weekend.
The Fight Night in Gladsaxe, a suburb of the Danish capital, is hosted by Gladsaxe BC, which was formed in 1916, and will see boxers from seven English and 11 Danish clubs competing.
And Romford trio Tom Lickfold, Paul Claydon Jr and Lewis Hughes fly out today (Friday) as part of a North East London representative squad.
Lickfold, 15, will box in light-bantamweight bout against Mikkel Skovgaard from Birkerod Boxing Club, while Claydon, also 15, will be up against 13-year-old Philip Sutcliffe from Kolding Boxing Club at the minimum weight.
The 16-year-old Hughes will fight at bantamweight against Yousef Barakji from Karlebo Boxing Club, having beaten him already on his way to winning the Haslev Box Cup in 2011.
Coach Paul Claydon senior said: “It’s a great honour to have three boys boxing for the division.
“Tom gets his opportunity very early, in only his fifth contest after showing promise in his previous bouts.
“While Lewis and Paul know their opponents very well from previous visits to the Danish capital, Paul will be meeting Sutcliffe, who is Danish-born after his parents emigrated 23 years ago from Dublin, for the first time.
“In the past they have managed to avoid each other, although it was inevitable they would meet sooner or later.”
n Hornchurch & Elm Park stage their first show of 2014 at Chafford Sports Centre tomorrow (Saturday).
Trainer Dean Smith has managed to find opponents national champions Sonny Ali and Maria Markowska, as well as beaten finalist Kelson Mitchell.
And the club hope to put on 20 bouts in total, including six senior contests, to get their year off to a strong start.
Doors open at 1pm, with tickets priced at £10 adults and £5 concessions and the action getting underway at 2pm and a licensed bar available.
