English middleweight champion targets British title
Romford’s Lee Markham fought fiercely for ten rounds to retain his English middleweight title at Brentwood on Friday night, then showed sympathy for loser Andrew Robinson.
The Worcester fighter insisted he had won the fight and Markham replied: “I know how he feels, I have been on the losing end of fights I thought I’d won – that’s boxing.”
Robinson wants a return, but joins a queue behind Markham’s old Five Star amateur clubmate Joe Mullender, who also lost a thrilling title battle against the English champion last May.
“I’ll fight anyone – for the right money,” added the 29-year-old Markham, who is also chasing new British middleweight champion Tommy Langford, who took the vacant title when winning a majority verdict over Sam Sheedy in Cardiff on Saturday.
Robinson lost a split decision to Sheedy in his last contest in July and certainly went all out to come back a winner at the Brentwood Centre on the Wam Boxing promotion.
The fans got full value for money as the well-matched pair poured on the punches in fierce toe-to-toe exchanges in every round.
The durable Markham was shaken more than once by Robinson’s solid shots, but landed powerful rights in reply and had his rival reeling rubber-legged in the eighth round.
At the final bell they were both weary, but still swinging punches when the crowd were divided about the winner, but the judges were unanimous, voting for Markham by margins of 98-93, 96-95 and 97-95.
It rounded off a good year for the Romford fighter, who won all three bouts in 2016 after just one win in four contests the previous year.
Also on the Brentwood Centre bill was Hornchurch super-lightweight Sanjeev Sahota, who scored his fifth straight victory when outpointing Hungarian Gyula Tollosi over four rounds.
Shaken in the opening exchanges, the 25-year-old Sahota fought back boldly to land two-handed attacks and, to the cheers of his ringside fans, he took a 39-38 decision from the referee.
