Hornchurch middleweight returns to ring
Hornchurch middleweight John Hefford has promised to take title rival Kieran Leinster out of his comfort zone next month when the duo collide in the opening round of the 2014 Queensbury League season.
Hefford meets fellow unbeaten contender Leinster in a winner takes all clash for the vacant Queensbury English middleweight title on Saturday February 8, after being forced to withdraw from his scheduled title showdown in November due to injury.
But he feels confident he will have too much for his rival, having just missed out on the super-middleweight belt in his last competitive outing in September, when he could only manage a draw against Northamption’s Jason Felix in a gruelling five-round contest.
Hefford believes he will be more effective down at middleweight and has already worked out a blueprint for victory, saying: ““It was really disappointing when I had to pull out of the fight in November due to damaging my wrist in sparring, but I’m now focused on this new challenge.
“I believe I’m a level above anything Leinster has faced before. I’ve watched bits of Leinsters last fight against Matt Piper and he looks a sound technical fighter, but I thought Piper was letting him get his shots off and that is something I just won’t let him do.
“Training-wise everything is going really well and I even ran the seven miles to my mums house on Christmas Day just so I wouldn’t miss out on my training.
“I’ve got the plan in place on how I am going to beat him, but it’s still going to be a tough fight.”
Hefford’s title showdown takes place at the Millennium Arena in the Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel in West Sussex.
