Former Coopers pupil Tom Toolis is delighted to have qualified for the men’s final at the Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Egypt.

Toolis, 24, performed consistently throughout the day to qualify for his first-ever World Championships final, where he will be joined by Rio Olympian Joe Choong, who gave an assured display.

“I’m so happy to make the World Championships final,” he said.

“It’s a significant achievement and something I’ve never managed before so it’s extremely pleasing.

“I was expecting very hot conditions and there were, but as I’d prepared for it in the build-up to the competition it was ok.

“The one thing I did struggle with was running on the sand during the laser run as that was particularly difficult, but I guess it was something everyone had to cope with.

“It was a very long, tiring day but hopefully I’ll get a good night’s sleep and then be ready for the fencing ranking round.”
