Athletes ‘surprised’ to receive prize

Havering Mayesbrook athlete Alex Law has revealed his surprise at winning the Junior Male competitor of the year prize at the Havering Sports Council awards.
Pentathlete Law saw off the challenge of tennis duo Connor Smythe and Gene Swain to claim the silverware in recognition of his achievements in 2011.
And he is hoping to keep progressing to more medals in future.
He said: “I was delighted and surprised to hear my name called out as the winner. It’s a great honour to receive such an award.
“I’d like to thank the club for putting me up for the award, and for me, competing for England was the highlight of the year.
“Coming second in the Four Nation event was a great achievement for myself and the rest of the team.
“All I can ask from myself is to continue to progress at the same level, and continue to produce my best, which will hopefully set me pick up more medals and achievements along the way.”
Kevin Mitchell has high hopes that his dream fight, a clash with WBO lightweight title-holder Ricky Burns, will take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park ground on the night of July 14.
