Seventeen-year-old Havering AC discus thrower Georgie Taylor is full of excitement heading into tomorrow’s British Championships in Birmingham tomorrow, but for the youngster it was almost a missed opportunity.

Taylor received an email on May 16 inviting her to the event, but she didn’t check her emails until this week.

She quickly phoned UK Athletics. Thankfully they were fine and Taylor will take her place in the 12-strong discus line-up tomorrow in the Midlands.

“I wasn’t really expecting it to be honest so it was a nice surprise,” she said.

“I found out about the chance via an email but I almost missed out on the chance has I don’t check my emails that often.

“It was only when I was online the other day that I realised I had the email so I had to make a quick call but thankfully they could still fit me in.”

The qualifying mark for the Championships was 45m, which dates back from last April, and the Havering youngster has plenty of throws over that distance.

Taylor has competed in the World Junior Championships in the past, but this marks her first senior Great Britain event – and she cannot wait for tomorrow.

“I will be the youngest one there so I’ll be a big underdog but it will be a great experience for me at this early stage of my career. Hopefully there will be plenty more to come,” she added.

“I am excited for the Championships and I haven’t had too much time to prepare as I had my last training session on Thursday night but hopefully I can do myself proud.”
