Havering Mayesbrook athlete impresses on big stage
Havering Mayesbrook’s Faye Fullerton confirmed her comeback is on track with a respectable 22nd place finish at the National Cross Country Championships in Birmingham.
Fullerton was among a field of over 700 in the senior women’s race, while Vicky Smith celebrated her highest ever finish at the event in 75th place.
Robyn Matson (88th) matched her previous best, but the Havering team were one runner short of a scoring quartet.
Molly Bath also competed in the under-13 girls race, finishing inside the top 300, and Tony Collins flew the club flag in the senior men’s event.
Shot-putter Emmanuel Quarshie improved his personal best in qualifying and the final at the ritish Universities Indoor Championships at Sheffield.
Representing Coventry University, Quarshie’s qualifying mark of 13.90m added over 20cm to his previous best and he improved further to 14.12m in the final to finish fifth with the third best all time by a Havering senior.
Richard Holland (Exeter) saw action in the long jump, recording 6.09m in the qualifying competition.
n It was another good week for Havering Mayesbrook athletes in the local parkrun events.
Matthew Braybrook was first home in the Barking event, with veteran Martin Chester in second place and Sarah Wilson the first woman home in a new best.
Ian Anthony continued his fine record at Southend, notching up his sixth victory of 2014.
n A small group of Havering athletes travel to Sheffield to compete in the National Age Group Championships this weekend.
Modupe Shokunbi steps up to the under-17 age group and competes in the 60m tomorrow (Saturday) and 200m on Sunday.
Tom Pitkin hopes to build on his fine indoor form in the under-17 400m event, while Michelle Hughes and Lucy Bailey both compete in the 60m hurdles on Sunday.
In the under-20 category Karl Tucker goes in the 60m hurdles and Ed Thompson competes in his first National event in the pole vault, as does Mercy Gutteridge in the under-20 equivalent.
