A one-day flash sale at a temporary high street outlet is being investigated by trading standards officers after complaints from outraged customers about its products.

Queues stretched out the doors of travelling auction Electronics Direct in South Street, Romford, on Saturday afteroon.

But some of the customers were not happy with the products they purchased and police attended after reports of an assault on one mother who was with her child.

Danny Holloway was walking down South Street on Saturday when he saw the commotion.

He told the Recorder: “There were queues of people outside and one woman was complaining.

“They were selling iPhone boxes that looked like them, but didn’t say iPhone - they were electric razors, and people must have thought they were iPhones.”

Police took no action after being called to South Street at 6pm to reports of an assault - deciding it was a civil dispute.

A spokesman said: “On arrival officers found that no assault had taken place. The incident has been referred to London Borough of Havering Trading Standards.”

The council has warned punters against purchasing goods from stores holding one-day sales.

Cllr Osman Dervish, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said:

“We are aware of an auction style sale which took place this weekend. Anyone who attends a one day sale should be extremely cautious about the goods they buy as there is often very little chance of exchanging them or getting a refund.

“If something is too good to be true, it probably is.

“Anyone who is unhappy with their purchases can call the Citizen Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506 for advice.”
