Upminster business Enterprise Plants was awarded a silver medal for its “Secret Pleasure Garden” at the show.

Sales director Matthew Monckton explained that the “unique” design had 300 plants growing on the outside as well as the inside of the structure to create a room out of the foliage.

The design, as was mentioned in the Recorder last week, is a variation on a “green wall” – a living wall that has vegetation growing over it and can be a feature inside or outside.

“The Chelsea Flower Show is quite conservative, so doing something a little bit different is great,” he said. “It was a great experience for all at the company.”

The business is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and took about 100 of its clients along to thank them for their support.

Matthew said he also managed to gain new clients at the annual show, staged by the Royal Horticultural Society.

“We picked up quite a bit of business off the back of it and it’s not often in trade shows you pick up speculative business,” he said.

“We’re getting more and more people asking for green walls for schools and different places now.”

The medal-winning display was visited by actress and Liberal Democrat life peer Baroness Floella Benjamin as well as the first woman to become a Chelsea pensioner, Dorothy Hughes.
