Pop an extra tin in your trolley at Sainsbury’s and you could help some of Havering’s less fortunate people.
The Romford store, in The Brewery shopping centre, has launched a food bank in aid of Jubilee House, a Main Road church that supports the homeless.
The food bank will open for one weekend every month at the customer service desk, where shoppers can drop off donations of dried and long-life food to help those who need it.
Store manager Lee Riley said: “We are pleased to announce our new initiative with the launch of the food bank in-store at Sainsbury’s.
“We understand the importance of, and demand for, such a facility, and the difference it can make to people’s lives.”
A spokesman said Sainsbury’s also delivers bread to the church throughout the week, and every Sunday it takes all its edible but unsellable food there.
