Year 7 students took part in a team game called “Around the World in Fiction” which involved them matching up book titles to different countries, while Year 8 students found out facts about a country of their choice.

Pupils were given World Book Day vouchers, which can be spent in participating book stores, and also made posters to mark the day.

World Book Day, taking place today, is a worldwide celebration of books, authors and reading.

The school’s librarian Heather Handley said: “We have a large donation of books and journals given to us by a former student, who was here in the early 1960s.”

Mrs Handley also put together a “Reading Role Models” PowerPoint presentation, which included members of staff explaining to students what their favourite books were and why.

Sue Ware, home school support worker, wrote in the presentation: “My favourite book is The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. I love reading historical novels, particularly ones based close to historical accuracy. This draws you into actually being there and your imagination can go wild.”
