Havering Council has apologised after contractors decided only those over 7ft tall should be warned about upcoming highway works.

The advance notice of highway works was attached about 14ft high to a lamppost. The advance notice of highway works was attached about 14ft high to a lamppost.

This notice, about 14ft high, was pinned to a lamppost in Glenwood Avenue, Rainham, by some bright spark in an attempt to warn pedestrians about road disruption.

The worker, who presumably had to climb a ladder to attach the two A4-pieces of paper, has come under fire from the council’s streetcare chief, Cllr Barry Tebbutt.

He said: “We don’t expect everyone to be 7ft tall and can only apologise for the error. The signs were put up with good intentions by our contractors, but sadly, they don’t serve their purpose as they are.

“We’ve asked for them to be moved and brought down so they are readable as soon as possible.”

The Recorder was alerted to the problem by Dave Jones, who posted the image on twitter with the following comment: “how the heck do we read this??? 14ft in the air!!! Great work @LBofHavering.”
