Mr Rosindell first met the then-Prime Minister at the Conservative Party conference in 1982 and became friends with the Iron Lady.

He said: “I’m deeply sad at the moment. I met her many times, in her later years she didn’t go out so much and I would often visit her at Christmas and Easter in particular, we became very good friends.

“I’m very sad that she’s no longer there but it’s her life that we should celebrate.

“She was such a kind, caring considerate person, she always made time for people, especially young people.”

He added: “In her career she saved this country and made Britain great again. She was also a very good friend to me.”

Lady Thatcher campaigned in Romford for Mr Rosindell’s successful 2001 election campaign and helped give the constituency the biggest Labour-Conservative swing in the country.

Mr Rosindell said: “I have a lot to thank Lady Thatcher for.”

Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas said: “She was a very strong leader and major player on the world stage. She led by conviction and a belief in ideas.

“I think you can admire these characteristics in a politician but also feel she was a divisive figure who took the country in the wrong direction.”

Mr Cruddas said his thoughts were with her family at their time of loss.

Brentwood and Ongar MP Eric Pickles said on Twitter on Monday: “Margaret Thatcher gave this country the confidence to believe in itself. A Great PM and the Great Britain.”

A statement from the Brentwood and Ongar Conservative Association said: “We are saddened by the news of the passing of Margaret Thatcher and our condolences go to her family.

“Margaret Thatcher was prime minister from 1979 to 1990. During that time she led the nation with a determination and strength of purpose that brought about real positive changes in our society that continue to resound today.

“We are unlikely to see her equal in our lifetimes.”

Cllr Osman Dervish said on behalf of the Romford Conservative Association: “Baroness Thatcher was a great leader for our nation and rescued Great Britain in her hour of need. Her commitment and conviction to British ideals were an example for all to follow.

“She taught us that hard work and courage were the way to succeed in life and that one person can make a real difference.

“While she may not be with us anymore, her legacy will not be forgotten and her ideals are the benchmark against which we should all measure ourselves.”

He added: “In honour of Mrs Thatcher, a book of condolence has been opened at our headquarters Margaret Thatcher House, 85 Western Road, Romford, Essex, RM1 3LS, for those who would like to make a tribute. If you would like to inscribe your condolences, please contact me directly on 07904 891392 or 01708 761583.”
