Tributes have been pouring in for a “popular and energetic member of Romford’s business community” who has been described as a “true gentleman”.

Peter Callagher, the general manager of the Mercury Mall in Romford lost his battle against acute myeloid leukaemia aged 43 on Saturday January 12.
Trevor Long, the former owner of Liberty Flowers in the shopping centre said: “The man was an absolute gentleman.
“Lots of businesses have been struggling for a long time and Peter did everything to help us when we were going through a really bad stage and that is one of the reasons we are still here today.”
The father of two was appointed manager of the shopping centre in October 2006 bringing to the role his experience from management roles at Allders Department stores and Debenhams.
He worked on ensuring that the shopping centre played an important role in the community.
Sarah de Courcy Rolls, deputy centre manager at the Mercury Mall said: “As a manager, Peter could steer his team with both a sure hand and a light touch.
“He loved retail and loved Romford and was totally committed to improving the town for the shops, shoppers and greater community.”
She added: “So many individuals and organisations have contacted us to pass on their sympathy and without exception have expressed their gratitude for Peter’s unstinging support, honesty and optimism through challenging times.
“Knowing Peter was a pleasure and a privilege and he will be greatly missed.”
Peter also helped to raise money for children’s charity, First Step by taking part in a skydive and the YMCA abseil.
He was in training for the London 10k Marathon last July when he was diagnosed with cancer.
His funeral is set to take place on Monday February 4 at Eltham Crematorium.
