Archant

I knew this would happen. After years in radio I am becoming Midnight Caller.

That ’80s TV show is probably the reason I got into the broadcasting arts. The idea of sitting in a studio and somehow helping people, but still definitely getting paid for it, really appealed to me.

It happened this week as a listener to my radio show contacted me asking for help. Normally any requests I get are, “Can you play *insert name of old song no one knows* for me?” So I was excited by this one.

He had spotted a pink pigeon in his garden in the Rise Park area and needed to find out how this could happen.

I didn’t turn to Google as searching for The Pink Pigeon would only throw up the address of a nightclub I think I went to. I asked the listeners.

Possible suggestions included the fact it was a white pigeon that someone had washed with a red sock. Maybe it wasn’t a pigeon, it was a really short flamingo.

Regular listener Lynn asked if it had been eating beetroot. All good suggestions, especially the beetroot one. I get stains from eating beetroot too and I have thumbs.

Online listener Anne found the actual answer.

Sher Singh, 39, a pigeon keeper from Bristol, was dying his birds pink to stop falcons eating them. I’m not sure how making something look like it’s being served with beetroot makes you not want to eat it, unless you’re on the Atkins.

Those pink birds could be anywhere in London or Essex. We don’t know why the pigeons came this far but if a guy was dying you pink you might try to get far away.

If you see one you’ll know what it is and all thanks to the power of radio.

Tune into Steve’s Friday show on Time 107.5 FM at 2.15pm for the weekly local paper review with the Recorder.
