Who is David Churchman? That is the question one homeowner wants answered after artwork from 1967 was discovered in the walls of his house.

Michael Clifton is having work done on his home in Pennington Close, Collier Row, and was amazed when a workman found a portrait of the house over the road in the wall cavity at the front of the building.

As well as the drawing, dated September 30, 1967 and signed by a David Churchman, the builder found a packet of Weights cigarettes - containing a dead spider.

Now Michael and his mother Margaret, of Chestnut Glen, Hornchurch, are desperate to track down the creator of the 46-year-old sketch.

Michael, who lives with his partner and 20-year-old son in the house, said he was amazed at the discovery.

“I thought ‘wow, who is this man?’ It would be good to get in touch with him and see how long he lived here for.”

As for the quality of the drawing, Michael was impressed.

“It’s accurate actually, especially if he was a school boy as we think. The street lamp has changed but the house is the same.”

Margaret added: “We are fascinated to know who David Churchman was, does he still live in the vicinity? What became of him?

“We think he was a schoolboy when he did the sketching, as he wrote ‘Time: 1/4 past 4’. That might explain why there was a spider in the cigarette box too. Young boys used to do stuff like that, didn’t they?

“Hopefully we will at least find someone who knew him, maybe family or friends, so we can solve this mystery of the cavity wall time capsule.”
