Twenty people escaped from a burning building in Rainham yesterday morning – but one four-legged resident needed a little extra help from firefighters.
When crews got into the smoke-filled seventh-floor flat in Dunedin Road, they found terrified Millie, a boxer and Staffordshire bull terrier cross, still inside.
Firefighters brought the dog to safety and, after treatment for smoke inhalation, she was returned to her owner safe and well.
The fire broke out at about 9.40am. Firefighters from Wennington and Dagenham fire stations had brought it under control within 45 minutes.
Watch manager Andy Barnard, who was at the scene, said: “Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued the dog and quickly brought the fire under control.
“When we got her into the fresh air she seemed happy enough and we left her in the hands of the RSPCA.”
Fire chiefs are investigating the cause of the blaze.
