Walking 10km around Romford might seem like a daunting prospect, but the 500 people who took part in Saint Francis Hospice’s Star Walk had plenty of encouragement on the way.

Former X Factor star Rylan Clark was a hit at the carnival-themed walk, performing several numbers to warm up the participants before setting them on their way.

Ballroom dancers, a steel band and stilt walkers helped provide entertainment on the night-time walk.

Many of those participating have seen relatives receive care at the hospice, including Susannah Corney from Dagenham, who lost her husband George to lung cancer in 2010.

She said: “It was an absolutely brilliant night, there was such a good atmosphere.

“The hospice was there when my husband was first diagnosed and then gave me so much support after my husband died so I like to support the charity.”

As a nurse at the hospice, Margaret Power has seen first hand what the money raised can do.

She said: “It was my fourth Star Walk and I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the carnival theme.

“As a hospice nurse I see the difference our care makes to patients and their families and so by joining the walk I’m doing something extra to help.”

The total hasn’t been announced yet, but it is hoped that the walk raised more than £60,000.
