St Francis Hospice 30for30: College girl raises £243 after single-handedly organising fundraiser

A girl who organised a fundraising event by herself raised £243.76 after fellow colleagues dropped out with two weeks to go.
In a bid to raise money for Saint Francis Hospice, Abby Powell, 18, took it upon herself to organise the evening at the Saxon King pub on Petersfield Avenue, Harold Hill.
“I’m so glad I stuck with it, it went so much better than I thought it would,” said the Havering college student.
“I was only expecting to make about £100 but I more than doubled that and I still haven’t counted boxes placed around the bar”.
Abby made the decision to donate the money to the hospice with her colleagues before they dropped out of the organising process.
“We chose it because it feels close to home,” she explained, “we wanted to do something that would benefit our community.”
Abby organised a quiz, raffle, buffet and a disco with the help of the pub’s landlady, Jane Phillips, who provided food and the quiz prize.
“The quiz winners won £50 and I arranged for a DJ to come for the disco which got everyone dancing until nearly midnight.
“Everyone said they had a really good night and I had loads of fun organising it,” Abby said.
“I would love to do something like this again and I am so happy to be able to hand this money over to the hospice now.”
